An Extraordinary Place to Dance.
2011–2012 Class Descriptions:

Ballet Royale offers nine programs of study, providing classes for children taking their first steps in our ground breaking Mommy & Me classes, to teens stepping into a professional dance career, adults revisiting or practicing their first plies, and professionals wanting to augment their training.
New Students with prior dance training seeking to enter Youth Ballet or higher are required to have a personal evaluation by the school Directors before beginning classes, in order to assess their training and abilities. This evaluation is necessary to ensure placement in the most appropriate level at Ballet Royale.

1)   Pre-Ballet Creative Dance. Ballet Royale's Creative Dance program is a professionally developed and comprehensive program drawing on decades of dance and music teaching experience, which
offers an incomparable experience for children from walking age (as young as a year)  through 6 years old. These innovative classes encourage musicality, imagination and self expression through the art of dance and music. We will have fun being fairies and dragons, beating on drums, galloping like wild ponies all in a fun, safe, nurturing environment.

Pre-Ballet Creative Dance classes (except Preparation for Ballet, which runs the full school season) run for 12 week sessions and consist of four divisions:

Mommy and Me from Baby to 3:
The first of its kind in Minnesota, Ballet Royale's original Mommy & Me classes offer a unique opportunity for parents and toddlers to engage in a fun, instructive activity together. This class is for adults of any age and children who are able to walk with minimal assistance, up to 3 years old. It meets one day per week for 30 minutes. Mothers, fathers, or guardian participation is required.

          Tutus 'n More for 3 and 4:
This class is for 3 and 4 years olds and meets one day/week for 30 minutes.

          We'll Come Alive at 6 and 5:
This class is for 5 and 6 year olds and meets one day/week for 45 minutes.

New for 2011- 2012: Preparation for Ballet (runs full school season):
This class is for mature 6 year olds and older who are ready and able to begin more focused pre-ballet training, and meets one day/week for 45 minutes.

Pre-Ballet Creative Dance Students will participate in studio performance/recitals at the end of each term, which provide parents, family and friends the opportunity to experience each child's activities and personal growth, while the students gain exposure to the procedures, commitment, discipline, and joy of preparing for and performing before a live audience.  The end-of year Spring Studio Showcase Performance at the Lakeville Area Arts Center will also include the Youth Ballet and Performance Track students. Costume requirements will be limited, and on an as-needed basis.
Ballet Royale feels an integral part of young students' education is to provide them with opportunities to see and enjoy the older and more experienced dancers.  All students in the Pre-Ballet Creative Dance program are strongly encouraged to attend Ballet Royale's annual theatrical performance "A Celebration of Dance" presented by the Performance Track and Youth Ballet Programs each spring.  For 2011 & 2012, this performance is the all-new, original full-length production, "Wizard of Oz--The Ballet," at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.

3)  Performance Track Program is for students who are talented, ambitious and wish for a rigorous or pre-professional course of study in classical ballet and related dance forms. One or two years of Advanced Youth Ballet or its equivalent is generally required.  Students must be pre-approved and invited each year to participate in this program; students new to Ballet Royale seeking to enter this program must take a placement/audition class in order to be considered for the program.  All placement decisions within this program will be made by the school directors and faculty based on the student's individual abilities, not their age.  Performance Track students will also have classes in classical-based Performance Jazz, Modern dance, Pointe, Repertoire, Pas de Deux ("partnering"), independent workshops, guest teachers and personal coaching.

The Performance Track program consists of three general divisions:

4)  Adult/Teen Ballet & Modern.  Ballet Royale does not limit its offerings to traditional ballet students.  We offer classes that are open to teens and adults of every level of experience. Adult Beginner and Advanced Beginner classes are designed for teens and adults with no or very limited previous ballet or Modern experience, and vary between 1 hour and 1.5 hours long.  Adult Open Ballet classes are 1.5 hours long, and geared toward the intermediate level teen or adult dancer with some prior ballet experience on a flexible, balanced level; these classes are ideal for teens who starting training later than traditional students, adults who danced when younger and wish to again enjoy the benefits and joy of ballet, or even professionals or teachers looking for extra classes.

5)  Privates & Coaching are offered to students and professionals of all ages who wish to augment their classes and/or accelerate their personal development.  Ballet Royale's professional coaching can assist in the preparation for an upcoming audition or solo, help better prepare a student to advance to a higher level of training, make up for missed classes, or just provide a personalized and fun experience. Ballet Royale offers private/coaching classes in increments of 1hour and 1.5 hours, on a private or semi-private split (two or three students) basis.  Ballet Royale students receive a special rate for private classes.

Ballet Royale also offers professional coaching to non-Ballet Royale groups of three or more, such as for students or professionals wanting an extra advantage or assistance in preparing ensemble works for an upcoming performance, recital, or competition.  Such coaching is arranged on a case by case basis, to best fit the needs of the group and schedule of the teacher or coach.

6)  Open Enrollment is for teens through adult who love to dance but are committed to various other obligations. This is a personally designed program consisting of Ballet, Jazz, and/or Modern classes, but on a less rigorous and more flexible basis than the Performance Track. Open enrollment students will be placed in the classes consistent with their ability.

Opportunities to perform in "A Celebration of Dance," presented by the Performance Track and Youth Ballet Programs, and in the end of year Studio Showcase Performance will be discussed with the student and decided by the school directors. Pricing is determined by directors on a case by case basis.

7)  Modern and Performance Jazz.  Ballet Royale believes that a key component of dancers' training is to expose them to complementary dance forms that augment their core curriculum.  Modern (Youth Ballet 3 and higher) and Jazz dance (Advanced Youth Ballet and higher) round out and advance students' overall strength, training and experience.

Modern: We offer four levels of Modern dance, from beginner through Pre-Professional levels. The Modern curriculum draws from Horton, Graham, Taylor and Cunningham techniques with emphasis on correct placement, sense of movement and transitional steps.

Performance Jazz:  We offer three levels of Jazz, from beginner through Pre-Professional levels. The jazz curriculum is based on classical jazz dance technique (performance or "theater" jazz), focusing on style, attitude, isolations, extensions, floor stretches, control and  rhythm. Performance jazz builds on a strong ballet base, helping the dancers become more musical, flexible, and well rounded, using age appropriate costumes, music and movement.

8)   Pas de Deux.  Literally "step of two," this class provides  the Junior, Senior and Pre-Professional Performance Track students the opportunity to learn and gain proficiency in one of the most exciting, advanced, and enjoyable aspects of dance: dancing with a partner.  Students learn the fundamentals of balance, coordination, and grace, as they learn supported pirouettes, promenades, lifts, jumps, and other key elements of the art.

Ballet Royale's Pas de Deux instructors bring years of professional experience, and the unique ability to teach both the male and female students not only how to partner but how to be partnered.
Our Pas de Deux class is free for men.  We invite dads, brothers, friends, etc., of our student dancers to join us in this wonderful experience.  No ballet experience is required for the men, just willingness and commitment.

9)    Pilates and Yoga.  In addition to traditional dance forms, Ballet Royale believes it is important to also offer movement based conditioning, strengthening, and cross-training opportunities. These classes are open to the general public as well as Ballet Royale students and families!

Pilates Core Conditioning.  Individual customized training and conditioning with a certified Pilates Instructor.  Cross-train, strengthen your core, increase  flexibility, and rebuild/recover following injuries,

Ballet Barre & Pilates Mat Fusion Class.  This class is a one hour fusion of Ballet and Pilates mat exercises.  You will be toning your body through the movement of dance whilst incorporating core Pilates exercises—a fun way to get fit!

Power Vinyasa Flow Yoga Class.  This class is a type of Yoga, where one connects and moves through the Yoga postures using fluid transitions and breath.
